Overlooked and Underserved: Providing Services for Incarcerated Survivors of Sexual Assault
In this workshop, JDI will discuss the key role that advocates can play in providing services for incarcerated survivors -- and give tips on how they can do so effectively. We’ll outline strategies both for advocates who are already working inside detention facilities as well as those who are looking to start. The session will cover a range of facilities, including immigration detention, and the types of services they are required to provide under the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) standards. JDI staff will also share success stories of confidential support programs for inmates, and participants will learn how their presence in detention facilities can build a culture of sexual safety behind bars. In addition, the session will help advocates adapt their skills serving domestic violence and sexual assault survivors in the community to detention settings, and cover most common challenges involved in this work, including protecting client confidentiality.
